About Barnsley Council Legal Services
Barnsley Council Legal Services support the council in delivery of its statutory and non-statutory services. There is a breadth of experience across the team in delivering first class legal services to the Council and stakeholders. With a number of specialist teams, legal services adopts a business partnership approach to the directorates to assist, advise and horizon scan work for a variety of functions. Barnsley Council pride themselves on their approachability, expertise and knowledge to ensure that the Council functions as one Council.

"This is an exciting time to be joining our Legal Services Team here at Barnsley Council. We have set out our vision following a full-scale review, having considered the changing environment of legal services in local authorities and are excited with our plans to bolster and develop the service to provide a first-class legal service to our colleagues in the council.

Key projects
Tour of Britain
The legal team are currently working on several Levelling Up Fund 2 projects including a Youth Activity Park which is a D&B project for a brownfield site to be regenerated into a youth activity park next to the Barnsley Youth Zone. They are also working on the redevelopment and upgrade of the Young People’s Wellbeing Hub based at the YMCA Barnsley which is a collaboration between Barnsley Council, YMCA Barnsley and local children’s charity, Chilypep. They are also involved in Northern Academy of Vocal Excellence which relates to the transformation of a vacant heritage court building into a new facility offering outstanding musical experiences for young people from Barnsley and the wider North and will provide a home to the award winning Barnsley Youth Choir.
The legal team were also heavily involved in the recent Tour of Britain Event working closely with senior management across the Council generally to review and prepare a host agreement with British Cycling Events Ltd to host the final stage for the Tour of Britain. They also worked closely with SYMCA and Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield Councils.
Alhambra
The Property Team act in-house on commercial property matters for two of our major assets, The Glass Works and The Alhambra Shopping Centre in Barnsley Town Centre. The Glass Works is an exciting new development by the Council that offers visitors shopping, restaurants, a cinema and a bowling alley. The Alhambra Shopping Centre has been recently acquired by the Council and is home to over 40 different stores.
We deal with a broad variety of asset management work on these such as new and renewal lettings with retail, leisure, food and drink tenants, market leases, applications for licences to assign/alter, rent reviews and surrenders.
